Looking at the files found in Anderson’s desk drawer, those redacted parts really stand out. It seems like you should be able to tell what each letter is, and if you put them all together it might actually spell out a message.
Before you have a chance to get to work on that, the phone at your desk begins to ring and you rush over to answer it. The moment you put it to your ear, you’re met with a taunting, pitch-shifted voice. You quickly hit record to log the call and listen closely, trying to make sense of what the strange voice is telling you.
You sit there with the handset to your ear, dazed, not quite believing what just happened. Minutes pass by and JD walks back into the office, more calm than before, but when he sees you he groans, knowing that something’s wrong.
“What’s up with you, Rookie? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
You recount the phone call to him, the creepy voice modulated message and the implication that it came from the person who kidnapped the girl you were looking for the night before.
“And they said Lowell is part of it? DAMN IT!” JD swore, slamming his fist into a nearby filing cabinet. “We heard the accusations when he got into trouble before, but I never thought he was on that side of things. He was a good Agent!”
Suddenly you realize that JD is hurt, that he truly believed in Agent Lowell. Seeing into the man and finding a softer, caring center takes you by surprise, almost as much as the call did earlier. You don’t know what to say, and just stare at the man.
“Look, either way we’re not likely to see Lowell again, Anderson put in his notice and isn’t likely to show up again either. I’m going to be stuck with finding more replacements for those guys, and I won’t be much help here. Can I trust you to keep on this, and find out what’s really going on here?” His gaze is full of sternness as he makes his plea, but now you can read the worry in the lines around his eyes. You nod in agreement, ready to track down the girl, Lowell, and whoever this Charming Bear is.
